Path 01
Selling outright keeps the vehicle decision separate.
An outright sale can make sense when you are not replacing the vehicle, have already arranged another vehicle, or simply want to compare purchase offers before shopping.
Ask how the buyer handles title, payoff, payment timing, and vehicle handoff. Compare the net amount you receive after any lender balance and transaction requirements are resolved.
Path 02
A trade combines the current car with the next purchase.
Trading can reduce the number of separate handoffs because the vehicle, payoff, and replacement purchase are handled in one transaction. Keep the trade figure and the replacement-vehicle price visible as separate numbers so the full deal is easy to evaluate.
Tax treatment may differ by state and transaction. Ask a qualified tax professional or the selling dealer to explain the treatment that applies to your exact purchase rather than assuming a universal savings amount.
Make the comparison useful
Compare the net result—not one isolated headline.
For an outright sale, look at the written purchase amount, payoff handling, payment method, timing, and transportation. For a trade, also separate the replacement-vehicle price, fees, financing terms, and any applicable tax treatment.
- Written vehicle purchase or trade amount
- Current lender payoff and remaining equity
- Replacement-vehicle selling price and fees
- Payment, pickup, appointment, and expiration terms
- Your time, transportation, and need for another vehicle
You can decide later
Start the appraisal before choosing the path.
You do not need to settle the sell-versus-trade question before requesting a local appraisal. Start with the vehicle, review any written offer that is issued, and then compare it with the rest of your plan.
Common questions
What people ask next.
Can I request an appraisal if I am still undecided?
Yes. Select “Still deciding” in the request. A final written offer, if issued after review, gives you another concrete number to compare.
Should I negotiate the trade and replacement vehicle separately?
Keeping each number visible makes comparison easier. Review the vehicle value, replacement price, fees, financing, payoff, and any tax treatment as distinct parts of the transaction.
